Before watching the “What Is Gender?” Queer 101 episode by The Advocate, I have never heard of the term “gender expression”. After watching the video, I realized I knew about the idea of gender expression but never knew the name for it and its importance. Gender expression and gender identity are two separate things an d are on their own spectrums. One could identify one place on the identity spectrum and also identify on the opposite end of the expression spectrum. An example used was a “tomboy”, where the person has a nonbinary gender identity, but have a completely feminine gender identity.

In the Gender, Sexuality, and Religion episode of the Religion Bites podcast, Malory Nye talks about how gender matters in the study of religion and how gender is a means of understanding the concept of culture. The importance of gender and how it shapes how we interact with others is shaped since birth. Nye also speaks on how power and gender are outlined in religion. Using the example of Christianity to show how gender plays out in an American context in debates about abortion and gender roles.
